language and representation

Years and Years - Eyes Shut Lyrics (first part of song)

Throw your heart to me
Let it fall and hit the ground
Let it go
Your timing was so wrong
I just want to be found

In this song the band talks about a possible breakup or loss of someone as they would want to be 'found' again. This suggests that they are now lost without them and don't know what to do anyone because they are missing a part of someone or something.  'Throw' demonstrates a metaphor as they gave all they could to them but it was at the wrong time. It also is exaggerated and sounds like it was forced for them to do so. In the second line it also seems like they want the heart to be left on the ground (not only because it was bad timing for them) but also because it sounds like the heart is now worthless and unwanted. 'Your' also states that they are putting all the blame on them when it would of been an equal decision if it was a breakup or one betrayed the other badly. It is also a personal pronoun as they would be directly aiming the whole song at someone. Overall this would make the reader seem sad as it is a slow song anyway but also want to know how bad the lead singer felt after betrayal. It could also make the audience think that something so simple such as love can be broken and hurt at anytime so it must be looked after and not 'hit the ground'.

  1. Good analysis of how the band is represented but you could say about what effect this will have on the reader and if they will be feeling the way the band wants them to feel.

  2. Good analysis of the lyrics. You could add what the effect of these lyrics have on the listener of the song may feel when listening to the song and the effect it has on them.

  3. Good analysis of The lyrics, make links to the lyrics that resemble the loss of something or someone in detail and how it effects the reader when they are listening to it.

  4. I like the choice of quotes you have used to analyse. You could maybe look at the lyrics from another's point of view. For example, either the implied reader or actual reader.

  5. I like the lyrics you have chosen however I think it would be nice if you added a bit more of the song to show more analysis and techniques. also maybe look at it from the readers point of view and add a comment about how it might effect different audiences.

  7. There are some good evaluative points here, with use of terminology. The lyrics you have chosen are quite vague and I think you add more of the lyrics to deepen your analysis and give yourself more to talk about. The quote is very emotional and adding terminology will really allow you to portray this song in the right way. You could talk about the significance of the choice of language; for example 'hit', it's very violent and harsh, why is this used instead of it fell on the ground?
    -Talk Descriptively
    -Add terminology

  8. Overall this is a good analysis of the extract of the song chosen, resembling the meaning of the song and how it effects the readers interpretation. However, you need to possibly analyse the implicit meanings of the song and add more terminology relating to the language chosen in the song.

  9. These are interesting lyrics - the imperative "throw your heart to me" implies the romantic cliche 'I will catch you if you fall' but the next line must surprise a listener who is aware of this cliche as the persona in the song seems to be representing themselves as someone who would not protect the implied listener and allow their heart to "hit the ground", the violence of the dynamic verb and the demeaning connotations of the noun "ground" perhaps representing the singer as someone who has been damaged by this implied listener's actions and now wants (another cliche)an eye for an eye - for them to see how it feels. These are cliches for a reason as it is something that is generally thought desirable to be supported by someone you love and to feel so hurt when this is not the case that you lash out. the song needs to resonate with as wide an audience as possible in order to sell more records, so tapping into these cliched expectations of relationships could aid in the popularity of the track.
